Occurring on February 29th, 2024, McAuliffe ASB hosted a Black History Month Jeopardy to test student’s knowledge on Black History facts. So who competed? Four students, Samantha Eiler, Emahni Calhoun, Lumi Walker, and Chloe Chun all put up great fights, but one came out on top.
How did we choose who was going to compete? About two weeks before the date of the Jeopardy, ASB released a Black History Month Kahoot to every history class for all the students to take. The history teachers took the top three players from each of their classes and emailed it to the ASB advisor, Ms. Bellinder. Then, invitations were sent out to every student who finished in the top three for them to compete against each other in one big Kahoot. At the end, the top two from each lunch were selected to compete in the actual Jeopardy Competition.
When asked how she prepared for the competition, Samantha Eiler replied saying, “I replayed the Kahoot and researched other Black History Month facts.”
As the contestants competed, it began to be a very close game that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Throughout the first half of the competition, Emahni Calhoun was in the lead by almost 1000 points. However, Lumi Walker was slowly catching up, using the 400 and 500 point questions. As the game continued, Lumi and Emahni were neck and neck. By the time the whole board had already been answered, Lumi and Emahni were both tied at 2500 points. It came down to the last question that decided the winner. They both put their wager at 100 points, so whoever gets the final question correct wins. Finally, when the final, deciding question was asked, Lumi guessed John Lewis, which was correct!
When asked how she was feeling about being tied with Emahni, Lumi replied “I was nervous that I wasn’t going to get the question right, but I’m extremely happy that I won.”
Lumi Walker finished in first place, winning an In n’ Out lunch for her and a friend at school, Emahni Calhourn got second place, winning an ice cream sandwich party for a class of her choice, Chloe Chun got third and Samantha Eiler for fourth, both winning gift cards! Each and every student, including the four contestants, that came to our Black History Month Jeopardy helped support Black History Month this February!
