St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. Would you happen to know the story behind why?
St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, but was actually born in England and was kidnapped by the Irish and taken to Ireland as a slave. It took him 6 years before he could escape back to England.
Many years later, he came back as a free man and there to teach the Irish about Christianity,y as back then they were mostly populated by non-Christians.
He uses the Shamrock to teach people about the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit (the ghost). This is now used as a symbol of the holiday.
Another symbol used to celebrate St Patrick’s Day is the leprechaun due to their deep roots in Irish folklore, as they are tiny, shoe-making fairies who hide their gold at the end of the rainbow.
Today, we celebrate by wearing green to symbolize Ireland, throwing parties, and trying to catch a little Irish leprechaun!
Now you know all about St Patrick and why we celebrate him.
