Diwali, also known as the Festival of lights is a Hindu celebration that landed on November 12th 2023. Diwali is India’s largest festival that is celebrated over the course of five days by illuminating both the interior and exterior of their houses with traditional clay oil lamps. People take part in festive gatherings, firework displays, large feasts, and prayers.
When asked why his family celebrates this holiday, 7th grader, Shritan Reddy Yelal responded saying,”My family and I celebrate Diwali because it resembles the light over the dark. This means that whenever there is darkness on one side we will have to find light within ourselves and spread it to others.”
He also mentioned that, “Diwali means peace and happiness, celebrating the festival of lights. Some traditions for Diwali we have are decorating and lighting lanterns all around our house.”
According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Hindus celebrate Diwali to commemorate Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after being exiled for 14 years before defeating the demon king Ravana. This religious festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
The word “Diwali” comes from the word “Deepavail” which translates to “a row of lights” which is how they celebrate the holiday.
Happy Diwali Eagles!
