May 1, 2024 – May 31, 2024, marks the beginning and end of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM)! This month celebrates the remarkable accomplishments and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The concept of dedicating a month to recognize their contributions was first proposed in 1970 by former congressional staffer Jeanie Jew to Representative Frank Horton. Later, in October 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution. Over time, May became the official month to observe the incredible heritage of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
In celebration of AAPIHM, our ASB CIA Committee hosted two popular events highlighting the heritage. The first event was a movie lunch day featuring Moana. Students enjoyed popcorn and nachos while watching their favorite sea-faring princess. Later, the committee hosted a hula hoop competition during lunch, where eager students flocked to the quad in hopes of showing their hula talents and winning a prize! Additionally, the committee produced several informational posters highlighting the accomplishments, struggles, and achievements of many remarkable Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders.
As the month soon ends, our McAuliffe community will have learned about the incredible people represented and recognized during this month and hopefully be inspired by their amazing stories! As Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would say, “Think back five years ago. Think of where you’re at today. Think ahead five years and what you want to accomplish. Be unstoppable.” (quoted from Yourstory)
