On March 8 countries around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. This is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
International women’s Day has its history in many events in the past century that contributed to itś creation as a day of celebration. For example,
- in 1908 women started to speak up about
women’s inequalities and oppression.
- In 1909 in the United States on february 28 National women’s day was observed.
- In 1910 at a women’s conference a women’s rights activists named Clara Zetkin
proposed that every year we should celebrate women and their achievements to
raise awareness to women rights. Everyone agreed.
- In 1911 International Women’s Day was honored for the first time in Austria, Denmark,
Germany and Switzerland.
- In 1975 International women day was celebrated by the United Nations for the first time.
- In 2011 on the 100th anniversary, president Barack Obama declared that all of March will be women’s history month.
